Worldwide Retailer Car Park Relandscape in North of England

How a New Landscaping Scheme Updated the Visual Appeal of this Busy Retailer Car Park with an Effortless Modern Look

We were recently tasked with completing a major full-site car park relandscape in the north of England for one of the world’s biggest retailers. Read on to find out how we reworked this busy retail car park.

As an existing client of ours, we’ve already collaborated with them on other large projects to help them expand their range of services in the UK. This previous work included full-scale landscaping installations across many of their UK locations as they rolled out petrol stations on select sites.

With the job taking place in a busy retailer car park, our top priority throughout the process was operating safely among the public, as well as causing minimal disturbance while they use the car park. Given that the work involved working on various landscaping areas across the entirety of the car park, this no doubt sometimes proved to be a challenge!

Our client wanted a modern, low maintenance landscaping scheme to complement the site – something visually striking, but not too busy. To achieve this, we firstly had to rip out the existing scheme to make way for our new vision. From there, we could then complete the topsoil improvements necessary to give the trees and shrubs waiting to be planted the optimal conditions they need to thrive.

Introducing more trees and specimen shrubs to the landscaping wasn’t only an aesthetic choice, but an environmental one too. Tree planting has been shown to significantly reduce temperatures in open, paved areas such as a car park, helping to reduce the localised warming that affects these urban areas and cities.

After the planting was complete, the finishing touches were to place large feature stones throughout the new scheme, and to top the soil with decorative pebbles to give it that modern look. The addition of the pebbles is another feature that serves a functional purpose as well as a fashionable one. Using pebbles on top of the soil provides a low maintenance solution to keeping the landscape looking tidy and, in a way, self-sustaining too.

They only need an occasional washing, which with the northern climate, they’ll no doubt see their fair share of water. Pebble surfaces are porous, so this moisture will then pass through into the ground. The pebbles not only help improve moisture retention during any hotter weather, but they’ll help to protect from fluctuations in temperature by providing insulation. Perfect for helping the newly-planted shrubs to survive the unpredictable British weather! They’ll also help to suppress weeds and to catch any fallen leaves and twigs, so that they can easily be swept up to keep the schemes looking their best.

Some before pictures of the site prepped and ready for a full landscape renovation. As you can see, it wasn’t particularly welcoming!

After the transformation: instead of being an eye sore, now the new sleek and modern landscaping scheme is ready to welcome customers into the car park.
