Soft Landscaping for New 5-Star Boutique Hotel in Northumberland
When it comes to a luxury hotel stay, the surrounding grounds make all the difference in creating a welcoming first impression. Well-maintained grounds full of interesting landscaping features show that the hotel cares about its reputation, and that that is reflected in the immaculate facilities both inside and out. We were tasked with doing just that as part of a legacy project for a major client in the north of England, taking care of the soft landscaping, planting, lawn creation and wildflower meadow creation for their new 5-star hotel in Northumberland.
Recently opened this summer, Bailiffgate Hotel is a new luxury 5-star hotel in the heart of Northumberland’s breathtaking landscapes. Before being transformed into a boutique retreat, the premises were once the Duke of Northumberland’s Commissioner’s house, as well as the old Duchess’s High School. This storied history makes it a beloved site of locals who have been excited to see the new developments of their former school and how the hotel will preserve this heritage. With Bailiffgate now open to the public, we’re glad to see that the reception to the hotel has been overwhelmingly positive in the community!
The town is getting more visitors than ever, with historical landmarks like Alnwick Castle on the doorstep as well as the Alnwick Garden, and Northumberland’s picturesque coast and countryside waiting to be explored. With this continual rise in tourism, it’s been in dire need of first-class accommodation to welcome in guests and to continue to attract new ones, too.
We’re proud to have carried out the landscaping work on this project to ensure that the exterior of the new hotel site matches the 5-star quality inside. Our brief was to provide all the planting and finishing works to create gardens and landscapes, including the courtyard, as well as creating lawns and wildflower meadows on the grounds. While we currently don’t have any pictures to represent the lawn creation and wildflower meadow creation (we’ll have some photos to demonstrate our hard work once they’re all more established in a few months), we can still happily show off the work we’ve undertaken on the hotel courtyard.
Every detail of the 48-room hotel’s construction has been thoughtfully considered, so naturally we put the same care and attention into our landscaping and planting work. The hotel welcomes four-legged friends and boasts several dog-friendly areas, including the Courtyard Garden area. This added another level of consideration to our planting choices, as we needed to choose dog-friendly plants to ensure that both man and man’s best friend can happily enjoy their stay.
We chose a range of plants, shrubs, climbers and trees that will create year-round visual appeal for guests without needing too much upkeep. We also incorporated a woodchip mulch around the plants to keep the beds looking tidy and to keep them low maintenance – the mulch helps to suppress weeds, retain moisture in the soil and regulate temperatures in the bedding to protect against extreme weather conditions. The choice of garden bedding, alongside the wooden structural elements such as screens, pergolas and benches, also complement the surrounding natural landscapes of the charming market town.
