That’s why we were trusted to provide a full courtyard renovation, re-planting and landscape maintenance to Asa Briggs House, their flagship student accommodation in Leeds.

SPA Landscaping was brought in to deliver a quality-focused grounds maintenance service specification. This detailed contract included carrying out a full landscape renovation of the courtyard, working with the existing features to rejuvenate the area, replant beds where necessary, and carry out hard surface cleaning – giving students a high-quality place to study, meet and socialise.

With all the stress that comes with moving to a new city and working towards a degree, it’s vital that students have a place nearby outside to be able to catch their breath, relax and soak in some vitamin D.

Located in the heart of Leeds, the students living at Asa Briggs House need an outdoor space that can be enjoyed safely and securely right on their doorstep - a respite from the hustle and bustle of student life in a major city. And, with a large volume of students to service, it’s a space that needs to be functional as well as just visually appealing. The courtyard and outdoor games area already featured pergolas, multiple seating areas, picnic benches and outdoor ping pong tables to provide students with plenty of space to let loose, but the overall area needed a facelift to keep it inviting and operating at its best.

More important than the aesthetics of the space, the safety of the students living there is paramount. Part of this included giving the hard surfaces a good clean to remove any build-up of moss, grime and any other debris that can become a slip hazard once the colder, wetter months hit – especially as they coincide with the start of the academic year. To make sure the job was taken care of properly and efficiently, we brought out our trusty Westermann moss brush removal machine to clean the paving and pathways, leaving it all looking good as new.

As well as working on the hard surfaces and a general tidy-up of the courtyard space, we also reinvigorated the existing beds by removing any pesky weeds and replanting plants and shrubs to introduce new colours and textures. As always with jobs like this, we picked a good mixture of low-maintenance greenery that adds interest without being too needy or likely to become easily overgrown. This included applying mulch to these areas to suppress weeds and keep the space looking tidy, while also providing natural benefits to the plants themselves, such as moisture retention and temperature regulation. Now, Leeds students at Asa Briggs House can happily enjoy the courtyard at their student halls come rain or shine.
