Supply and Installation of Planter Scheme for New NHS Diagnostics Centre

We believe that, from the moment somebody approaches a healthcare facility, the experience should reflect the quality of care inside. Clean, green and thoughtfully maintained surroundings contribute to an atmosphere of health, dignity and healing. This is why we were recently tasked with installing a planter scheme to provide a welcoming entranceway for a new NHS Diagnostics Centre.

Part of the NHS’s ongoing plans to make checks, scans and tests more accessible to the community, a Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) provides vital services to patients in a setting that allows for easier and faster diagnoses, away from an acute hospital setting.

Our brief was to design, supply and install a planting scheme for a new NHS Diagnostics Centre. This included installing large planters around the perimeter of the healthcare building, as well as framing the external entrance walkway leading up to the doors with them. On top on this, once we’d installed the planters and planting schemes within them, we were contracted to provide establishment aftercare to ensure each planter’s ongoing health and maintenance.

For the planters, we chose minimalistic trough planters in a neutral matte grey colour to create an outdoor space that reflects the clean, clinical nature of the property – one that looks welcoming while still being professional and isn’t visually overstimulating. The existing space consisted of plain slab pathways, so the minimal design of the planters complements the space while adding some visual interest in the form of greenery. By lining the walkway with the planters, it also provides a clear, well-marked pathway for safe navigation on the premises.

We naturally chose a combination of plants, shrubs and ornamental grasses that are aesthetically pleasing and welcoming, but we also selected plants that are low maintenance and low allergen producing, given their location on a healthcare property. To continue with the minimal theme, we designed the planting scheme to be attractive without being too busy. We steered away from bright blooms and multi-coloured varieties, opting instead to prioritise leafy green plants and grasses that create a calm, natural and grounding feel in an environment where visitors may be arriving feeling scared, anxious or uneasy.
