Core Landscape Renovation for Student Accommodation in Coventry

SPA Landscaping was recently brought in to provide a student accommodation in Coventry with core landscape renovation services to bring the site back up to a maintainable standard after it had been left to grow a little wild and was in need of some TLC.

A new site for us, we were contracted to carry out weed control, renovation pruning and hard surface cleaning around the exterior of the student hall building in order to restore it to an acceptable and sustainable level of tidiness going forward, ready for a new cohort of students come the new academic year.

Before we got to work on the site, there was a border of unkempt shrubbery getting out of hand around the building area, as well as weeds growing out between the paving slabs and gathering around the bottom of the shrub areas in particular. The bike shed was also harbouring tall, overgrown weeds that had wormed their way up between the slabs, and the raised tree bed had accumulated a pile-up of twigs, weeds and other debris.

Overall, the site was looking untidy, unloved and was generally a bit of an eyesore. And when you’re a new student embarking on the daunting journey of moving out and diving into university life, the last thing you need is to be moving into a space that doesn’t give a clean, friendly first impression. By ensuring that these external areas are inviting and cared for, our grounds maintenance teams play a vital role in supporting student mental health and overall happiness during their time in halls.

To bring life back into this outdoor space, our team began by taking care of the shrubbery. After a good pruning to neaten up the shrubs, the space was already starting to look much better. This pruning also helps to prevent potential hazards forming in the future, such as wayward branches that can snag the clothes of passersby or branches at ground level spilling out and becoming a trip hazard. The shrubs were already beginning to obstruct the ground floor windows of the accommodation, so this proactive maintenance helps address potential problems before they can materialise.

Another area that needed some love was the raised tree bed. We cleared out the tree bed, removing the unsightly excess of twigs, branches and other debris that had accumulated over time, and applied a woodchip mulch to the bed for a neater look going forward. More than being better to look at, the mulching is beneficial to the roots of the trees, helping them to grow healthily with less maintenance.

To tidy up the hard surfaces and remove moss and weeds from between the paving slabs, we brought out our ever-reliable Westermann moss brush machine and put it to good use. We also tidied up the bike shed area, so that it’s more visually appealing and hopefully encourages students to ride bikes knowing they have a tidy place that’s not overrun with weeds to lock them up.

We didn’t have to undertake a complete landscape overhaul to restore this site to its former glory, but if anything, that just goes to show that the details matter when it comes to grounds maintenance. By simply trimming back the shrubs, removing weeds and cleaning the hard surfaces, the outdoor area now reflects that this is a student accommodation that cares about its reputation and its residents.
